the banking is a collection of three works.

a film,

a radio broadcast,

and an archive.

originally conceptualised as an exploration of isolation and nostalgic connections to site, the three works focus on a slag heap in Scissett, West Yorkshire, England.

for five generations my family have lived next to the slag heap, a hill made from the waste material of the Nortonthorpe Coal mine, now referred to as The Banking.

in her 1954 retrospective at the Whitechapel Art Gallery Barbara Hepworth wrote “perhaps what one wants to say is formed in childhood and the rest of one’s life is spent trying to say it?…the early years of my life in Yorkshire is dynamic and constant in my life day to-day”

in more recent more trying times the three works have become a process of expanding the domestic space during the 2020 lockdown.
